Teachers2Parents Text Messaging system
Published:  15 February, 2008

The communication link between teachers, parents and  pupils is vital in order to maximise the quality of education for each year of school leavers. If a good relationship is maintained between all three parties then the chances of attainment slipping or truancy taking place are kept at a minimum. However, with the size of classroom numbers increasing it is becoming more of a challenge for teaching staff to keep track of each individual pupil, and even harder to maintain a close working relationship with their parents, thus the communication break down begins.

The founders of software company Teachers2Parents recognised this tread and decided to develop a solution to this need that was cost and time efficient and meant that staff could now interact with parents within a couple of minutes. Education Today talks to the brains behind Teachers2Parents to explore the advantages of implementing the system in your school

How does the software work?

The beauty of this product is that it doesn't have any hold over the school's existing IT system as all data is held on the web. There is no disruption for the school as there is no installation required so lessons in which IT is used can continue as normal. All we need is the registration data which our team will import into the Teachers2Parents system. After teachers have been given their secure log in and password, within a few simple clicks text messages can be sent to hundreds of parents.

What are the benefits of implementing this system?

Using the text messaging service means that teachers can contact parents quickly and efficiently so if the school has to suddenly close or there is a last minute cancellation of an after school activity, parents can be informed within 2 minutes of the message being prepared.

For schools having difficulty with poor attendance, insufficient homework or incorrect school clothing it allows teachers the freedom to talk directly with parents to resolve these issues. Of course it is also a great medium to praise pupils through and also transmit exam results and achievements

How many schools are already using the software?

Over 700 schools are using the system already and if requested, case studies can be provided. Since implementing the system, school managers have reported an increase in attendance, punctuality and better parent-school relationships. Alongside this admin staff can be utilised in a much more effective way as time taken making huge quantities of phone calls are reduced dramatically.

What security measures are in place with the system? How can you stop parents being overwhelmed with messages?

Our unique 'intelligent' messaging system allows school managers to set a limit on the frequency and type of messages sent, such that parents are informed regularly. At the same time it ensures parents do not receive too many or duplicate messages. The system ‘intelligently' screens all messages and only sends those that satisfy the predefined thresholds and criteria. Furthermore, all the details of a text message that a teacher wishes to send are logged, including those that are not actually sent. From this a variety of valuable reports, which support pupil tracking, can be produced for school managers and ultimately lead to a more structured school life for teachers and pupils. This in turn strengthens the relationship between schools and parents which leads to an optimum learning environment for pupils.
