2nd generation Wireless Technology
Published:  15 February, 2008

Innovative ICT school, Arnewood School has teamed up with wireless solutions provider Deverill Ltd, to become the first education provider in the South West region to install a second generation WiFi system.  The wireless network delivers comprehensive e-learning capabilities via individual laptops to teachers and students, and a portal for parents to interact with the school at their convenience.

The School commissioned Deverill to install a secure, robust wireless network which gives reliable blanket coverage across the five buildings on the school's site. The solution consists of 3Com Wireless Access Points, powered by PoE switches, which use the main backbone fibre network to communicate with the wireless switch.  The network is managed using specific software which can detect any wireless device within the coverage area and maintains the security of the network by ensuring that there are no rogue devices trying to connect.

Over the next four years, the use of the wireless network will grow from around 400 laptops to 1200 laptops connecting concurrently. The programme of equipping students with laptops began in September 2007 with 195 year 7 students.  Parents are able to purchase a laptop for their child via a donation scheme, which is accessible to families of all income levels.
