Helping 16 year olds revise
Published:  18 January, 2008

Stick a webcam in the homes of most 16 year olds as they prepare for their GCSEs and you will find them doing exactly what their parents did 30 years ago when they were at school - reading through their books with the radio or TV on.

As a method of doing revision the approach is worse than useless. Reading through is itself bad enough - having music or the TV on is distracting. But the young students end the session believing that they have actually done some revision. So then they settle down... to watch TV or listen to the radio.

To be effective, revision has to be a highly active, highly focussed affair on the part of the student - the student has to be doing something more than just "reading through". It has to be a varied and engaging session.

ConquerMaths is an on-line GCSE maths course that enables the student to go back to any aspect of the GCSE maths course that he or she does not understand and get accurate information presented in a multi-sensory way, with text, voice, illustrations on screen, and activities to be completed. Better still, those activities are then immediately marked thus providing both the student and the teacher with instant feedback.
