Fairtrade for Southampton
Published:  18 January, 2008

Southampton University is celebrating its increasing conviction to Fairtrade products. The university began its Fairtrade journey over four years ago, and was granted Fairtrade status in October 2006, following the successful completion of the HELO (Healthy, Ethical, Local, Organic) questionnaire.  Southampton University now offers a full range of Fairtrade goods.

In order to source as many products from one supplier, the Operations Team found Café Bar, a leading UK supplier of hot and cold beverage systems, to be the ideal ally.

Café Bar is able to supply the full complement of Fairtrade beverages including tea, coffee, hot chocolate and sugar, as well as supporting the university with point of sale materials like signage, menu boards, table talkers and posters, etc.

Additionally, the university sources large proportions of meat and fish locally, and juices and smoothies are organic.  A large percentage of produce is purchased from local suppliers and each month local farmers sell their produce to students and staff.

Students and staff are more than happy to pay a few pence more for hot drinks, in the knowledge that a proportion goes back to farmers and their families.  From a starting point, just over a year ago, when the university polled two hundred students and staff on the ‘HELO' initiatives, it is gratifying to see that Fairtrade products are now an integral and popular aspect of campus life.
