Sharp’s latest WriteView calculator: the EL-W506B
Published:  18 January, 2008

The EL-W506B – its latest WriteView scientific calculator aimed at secondary school students. Using Sharp WriteView display technology the calculator encourages students to fully understand problems they are solving by displaying four lines of formula in text book layout, including fractions, indices, irrational numbers, complex numbers, integration, differentiation, matrix calculations, list calculations and hyperbolic functions.

The EL-W506B WriteView has all the functions and features expected from an advanced scientific calculator such as user defined function keys, constant calculation, equation solving, metric conversions and storing of expressions (formulae). The multi-line playback facility also allows students to scroll back through calculations and recall previous answers.

A fun and unique message feature means that students can personalise their calculator with a 32-character, two line username, motto or farewell message that displays when the power off key is activated.

The EL-W506B WriteView also supports a ‘whole class teaching-method’ through its PC emulation software. This simple program enables all functions and features of the calculator to be performed on a PC. Using data projector systems or interactive whiteboards, teachers can demonstrate each step of a mathematical problem to a student group, who can follow it on their individual calculators. The software is included free with an order of 30 or more calculator units.

“The easy-to-use PC emulation program has been a great success with teachers who have used it with our previous models,” said Grace Liang, product manager, Sharp Electronics (UK) Ltd.  “The program helps students to follow, perform and understand complicated calculations in a fun and interactive way. A unique screen display capture facility also allows teachers to store sequences of screens for use in student worksheets, handouts, homework exercises and PowerPoint presentations.“

Sharp has also developed a comprehensive set of support material for both teachers and students.  The resource pack CD includes an operation manual, pupil worksheets, teacher worksheets and details of Sharp’s UK website on which more documentation and classroom materials are held.  The worksheets, which include problems, points for discussion and ideas for extended study, encourage students to self-develop their understanding of the EL-W506B WriteView’s extended functionality and capability.

The dual-powered (battery and solar) EL-W506B WriteView has a RRP for the education market of £13.99.  The model will be available from education dealers and retail suppliers including Business Electronic Equipment Ltd, Integrity Services Ltd, Jaytex (Mcr) Ltd, Oxford Educational Supplies Ltd, Oxford Scientific Solutions, Sci-Net Ltd, Yorkshire Purchasing Organisation Ltd and COMCAL (Scotland) Ltd from January 2008.
