Magical Micra and cool Quartz achieve top marks at schools
Published:  06 December, 2007

Spillages and shoe scuffs were proving a real headache for teachers at a Warwickshire school as previous floors in its science laboratories have always failed to score top marks. But now thanks to interior surface specialists Altro, the lab floors at Kenilworth School are going to be making the grade for longer after Mirica was recently installed in two attractive colourways.

And it isn’t just at Kenilworth School, where Altro is wowing children and parents alike after AltroScreed Quartz was installed at St Christopher’s School in Letchworth. Finding flooring which has an excellent finish and offers durability combined with non-slip properties was proving to be a tough test for the school until they discovered the durable product.

Altro Mirica has been developed to retain its attractive appearance, even in high traffic areas and has been created with the needs of the end user in mind. Its modern patterned look is designed to help camouflage scuffing and routine daily soiling in between cleaning, which means corridors can look as good at the end of the day as they do first thing in the morning. The product also incorporates Altro Maxis patented technology for ease of cleaning and ongoing reduction in cleaning costs.

School business manager Alison Pointon said: “All the flooring we have had in the past have not made the grade and it is really refreshing to see a floor, which can withstand such heavy traffic and stubborn stains.

“The children are always walking between desks, carrying various solutions, so we needed a flooring which could cope with shoe scuffs and hide any wear and tear, which is exactly what the Mirica does.”

The new collection is available in six attractive colourways, offering a choice of contemporary colours developed by Altro in conjunction with leading colour consultants and designers. The colours of Mirica have been selected to complement Altro’s popular Suprema safety flooring range, greatly enhancing the design capabilities of both products.

Meanwhile, Sue Horner, business manager at St Christopher’s School, said about AltroScreed Quartz: “We knew this flooring would be the perfect solution. Being in a high traffic education environment, the floors take a lot of punishment due to children walking up and down it so often, so durability is obviously an issue.”

AltroScreed Quartz, in a two-tone design from the new collection, was installed in the corridors as part of a revamp of the area. One colour was used for the main floor and then an alternative shade was used for the coving, with a chrome trim dividing the two. The product was chosen as it offered a high level of functionality, whilst also creating an attractive atmosphere for pupils.

Miss Homer added: “This product is extremely hard-wearing and very easy to clean.

The flooring has performed extremely well, and we have had no problems with staining or impact damage. We were searching for flooring which had an excellent finish and offered durability combined with excellent non-slip properties. That’s when we found Altro.” The flooring was installed by Resincraft. Director Mark Brewer said: “We have worked with AltroScreed Quartz for years and we have always found it to be a top floor. It is really durable but at the same time offers a really impressive look. The two-tone design at St Christopher’s School is an example of Altroscreed at its best.”

A boutique range of colours was recently added to the AltroScreed Quartz portfolio, offering bright and contemporary shades to give more options to a project, especially where colour choice is critical.
