The structure was made from recycled tyres filled with hogin, and a timber frame with straw bale walls covered in lime render. An environmentally friendly waterproofing system was sought for the roof to allow the classroom to maintain its ecofriendly build.
The roof of the structure is an unusual shape and would have proven difficult to waterproof with a traditional sheet waterproofing system. Furthermore, because of the large quantity of straw, a heat and flame free application was also highly desirable. Liquid Plastics, manufacturers of quality seamless protection systems, stepped forward to provide a Decothane Gamma 20 liquid membrane.
Decothane is completely cold applied, thus eliminating any need for heat or naked flame during application, and once installed it also meets the highest fire ratings in the world. A steel grey colour was chosen to provide an aesthetically pleasing finish to the building.
Decothane is manufactured in the UK by Liquid Plastics so less carbon miles were accrued by using the product, thus helping to maintain the eco-friendly build. Furthermore, because Decothane is liquid applied there are no cut offs, therefore zero wastage. Decothane can also be applied straight to the substrate and over coated at the end of its design life without removal of the existing coat, so no waste is produced to go to landfill. In addition, the completed application is guaranteed to last at least 20 years before first maintenance is required.
