What makes this new 500 pupil, £7million school so different is that it is designed around a ‘beehive concept’ providing classrooms and play decks together on the upper levels. The play decks all face south to provide sheltered outdoor play all year round and the learning areas are accessed from the decks.
850m2 of FOAMGLAS® tapered roofs, using T4 slab was specified to insulate the roofs on which the play areas would be created. Of primary importance was the need for a non-compressive insulation which could be incorporated into a tapered roof construction to ensure effective drainage of the external play areas.
Pittsburgh Corning worked with BDP Manchester to design the tapered roof construction – each piece of FOAMGLAS® T4 slab was pre-cut to falls and laid according to a computer generated plan provided by Pittsburgh Corning’s technical team.
