Schools spend approximately £70 million a year on water. Reducing water consumption will not only contribute to the preservation of our dwindling supply, it will also help to significantly cut water bills. A 600 pupil school, for example, can reduce its bill by anything up to £5000.
The majority of water used is in the washroom and this is an area where significant savings can be made. There are a number of washroom areas to consider:
In addition to ensuring that washroom products installed are water efficient, it is important to educate pupils in the importance of water saving and what they can do to help, both at school and at home. For example, many people use the WC as a waste bin. Pupils should be encouraged to use the bins provided for tissues etc instead of flushing them down the WC.
Children can often leave taps running causing unnecessary waste and the nuisance of flooded washrooms.
The key to these solutions is delivering the right amount of water at the right time, but it is also essential that schools raise awareness amongst pupils about the importance of water saving, and keep striving towards a more economical future.
