Learning through Experience at The National Coal Mining Museum for England
Published:  01 September, 2007

The National Coal Mining Museum for England preserves the heritage of the English coalfields and so learning lies at the very heart of the Museum.

Living History workshops are a popular part of the education programme at the Museum with opportunities for pupils to develop skills in History, Literacy, Science and Citizenship. New for pupils 2007/2008, are two workshops titled Stories of a Bevin Boy and A Bevin Boy Remembers, where pupils have the opportunity to meet Jeff; a Bevin Boy in World War Two. Jeff explains how he was conscripted to work in the mines during the war and describes his experience of working underground. Pupils will be able to handle objects and documents, and ask Jeff questions about his contribution to the homefront.

An exciting new addition to the Museum’s education programme this year is videoconferencing. From September 2007, the Museum is offering two videoconferencing sessions: ‘Stories of a Bevin Boy’ available on Mondays at 9.30 and 14.30 and ‘Meet a Miner’, available on Thursdays at 9.30 and 14.30. To participate, schools need to be registered with JVCS and sessions need to be booked with the Museum’s Education Officer.

Other interactive workshops at the Museum provide a range of hands-on learning activities, including group work, object handling and role-play, which deepen and enrich subject learning, and give groups the chance to experience a world beyond their classroom. The Education Program also offers an Outreach service, for learners unable to visit the Museum.
