County Durham primary school pupils get to learn in outer space...
Published:  01 September, 2007

Young people and teachers from Peases West Primary School in Billy Row, County Durham – a Creative Partnerships Durham Sunderland 'School of Innovation' have been working with two Landscape Architects from Newcastle-based landscape and urban design practice Colour: Urban Design Limited (UDL) to deliver an intensive exploratory programme aimed at encouraging the educational and physical benefits of learning outdoors; and to enable them to become heavily involved in the creative redesign of their school grounds.

The exercise has put the young people at the heart of their learning by giving them the chance to develop the practical use of the school’s ‘built environment’ - ultimately benefiting future generations of pupils at Peases West Primary School.

The challenging process is a wonderful partnership intervention between the school, the creative practitioners and a team of analytical researchers that aims to prove how the different use of ‘space and the school environment’ can affect the level of learning.

The young people have devised various design concepts that will hopefully be implemented in the transformation of the school’s ‘external space’ into a safe, comfortable and thriving hub of learning activity.

Creative Partnerships Durham Sunderland has developed strong partnerships and research programmes with 22 core schools. Their vision is to build upon these relationships and to embed the Creative Partnerships practice with a wider range of schools and partners.
