Technology is Big Business for Schools
Comment by Alison Locke, Marketing Manager, Olivetti UK Limited

On a recent visit to a preparatory school, to conduct a PR case study about their use of technology, I met the Bursar, which is the norm on such visits, but I also met the IT Manager and the IT Technician who have been responsible for maintaining the school’s vast IT network which combines both Windows and Linux operating systems – which is quite a mean feat by anyone’s standards.

What was very apparent was that the school has a long history of traditional teaching methods, which it maintains, yet has really embraced the idea that technology can bridge the age and culture gap between teachers and the students, because of the interaction it brings to classrooms. There was a definite buzz about the place and it was interesting to see how natural it was for the children to treat the technology as just a part of their everyday lives, even though much of the equipment they use has not been installed for long. The IT Manager is also a teacher at the school so had his finger on the pulse of what is required from both a technical and budgetary point of view and also what will be right to help teach the children.

It also dawned on me that schools are now run more like a business than ever  but the real difference is, schools can be safe in the knowledge that each year will bring a new set of students to them and they will be even more aware of and comfortable with the latest classroom technology.
