The Need for Better Visibility and Security
Published:  28 February, 2012

Dedicated to meeting the technology needs of its staff and students, universities around the globe are upgrading infrastructures to 10 Gigabit Ethernet and beyond in order to continue providing the best access to academic resources, networked applications and the Internet.

In order to keep the upgraded networks running smoothly, the tools used for monitoring and securing the infrastructure also need to be updated to keep up with the new speeds and feeds, thereby significantly increasing the overall expenditure.

With universities serving numerous users, including students, professors, and other staff members utilizing servers, desktop virtualization implementation, and many wireless LAN access points, schools need strict security in place to protect the identity and personal information of students and staff, as well as credit card information and academic grades. Virtual LANs (VLANs) are another layer of security, separating user by profile and administrative rights.  With the proliferation of multiple devices per person, end-to-end, real-time network visibility is crucial to securing, managing and monitoring a complex multi-layered network infrastructure.

Gigamon provides universities with traffic visibility solutions, where traffic from the 10-Gigabit inline TAPs and SPAN ports can be consolidated, filtered, replicated and shared across multiple monitoring and security tools. GigaVUE® devices enable data access and complete network visibility, enabling aggregation and filtering of multiple incoming 1G, 10G and 40G data feeds and ensuring that only the relevant traffic is sent to lower speed 1Gbps monitoring tools creating a truly pervasive Visibility Fabric™. The modular construction of GigaVUE Traffic Visibility nodes allows for different topologies, a range of media (copper to optical, multimode to single mode), and a wide range of data rates (10/100/1000Mbps through 10Gbps) enabling IT professionals to deploy the exact number of ports necessary to fit requirements.

With the Gigamon deployment comes immediate investment protection because IT is able to continue using existing 1Gbps monitoring tools. Enabled by the ability to aggregate multiple 10Gbps links with sophisticated filtering and load balancing, network engineers can direct specified traffic to appropriate tools. The scalability and extensibility of the GigaVUE traffic visibility fabric enables Universities and Colleges alike in meeting future network monitoring demands, thereby reducing the overall cost and complexity of the upgraded infrastructure further down the road.

Gigamon® provides intelligent Traffic Visibility Networking solutions for enterprises, data centres and service providers around the globe. Our technology empowers infrastructure architects, managers and operators with unmatched visibility into the traffic traversing both physical and virtual networks without affecting the performance or stability of the production environment. Through patented technologies, the Gigamon GigaVUE portfolio of high availability and high density products intelligently delivers the appropriate network traffic to security, monitoring or management systems.
