How teachers will cope with Catch Up Time
Published:  01 September, 2007

In July 2007 the government invented a new educational concept: Catch-Up Time, and promised that 25% of the time now devoted to the national curriculum will be liberated for teachers to run “Catch up” programmes. Catch-up time is intended for students who need one-to-one help in maths. The only problem is, no one has worked out how schools can afford one-to-one tuition on such a scale.

In fact there is only one solution: the use of on-line teaching programs which allow the students to work at their own speed. Foremost in the development of such programs is Conquer Maths whose key stage 3 and 4 on-line service has been rigorously tested and proven to be highly beneficial. Students can use the service both at home and in school – which means that the work done in “catch up” lessons can be built upon in the breakfast club, after-school club and for homework.

Such a provision overcomes the need for extra teachers, but has the advantage of revealing to the maths teacher at a glance exactly what work the student has done, and what the results of this work are via on line reports.

Students who are having problems with maths generally like this approach because it gives them the ability to come to terms with their problems in maths. It helps the many students who slip behind in maths and are afraid of the ridicule this failure can produce from classmates.

At a cost to the school of approx £3 – 5 per student per annum depending on the student numbers therefore catch-up is not only effective but also affordable across the country.
