‘Surfs up’ in cities & schools
Published:  12 March, 2010

Thousands of youngsters in cities and schools across the UK are being treated to a very different PE lesson as they get the chance to experience Aquajuice 67 Surf Anywhere Campaign – where they can try out surf sports and all possible without the need for a beach or waves.

A Summer city ‘Surf Anywhere’ Tour visited 20 city centres all over the country last year, featuring a specially constructed ‘Street Surfing’ arena in city centre venues offering thousands of kids a ‘Summer surf school’.

Now the ‘Surf Anywhere’ campaign plans to head off across the rest of the UK with a major schools programme as well as a second Summer Tour.   For the latest news go to www.youcansurfanywhere.co.uk    Sponsored by school approved Calypso Aquajuice 67 Juicy Water, in association with the British Surfing Association and Street Surfing, the sports programme has been designed to find new ways to demonstrate surfing skills and fitness elements to a wider range of kids.

Coaches from Street Surfing and The British Surfing Association (BSA) have introduced children to surfing by showcasing ‘surf sport’ alternatives – these tend to attract kids who often have little interest in traditional sports and for many, would be unlikely to gain access to surfing otherwise.  Each activity is a ‘surf derivative’ and promotes core fitness, balance and aerobic activity with the focus on fun

As one of the coolest, healthy, most appealing sports on earth it represents a lifestyle which most kids want to connect with.   “It often encourages kids who wouldn’t normally join in with traditional sports and sometimes it is the first time they have looked at or joined in with an exercise activity” said Surf Anywhere coach Karl Fice-Thomson.

Street Surfing, is the hottest, exhilarating surf sport from the US and uses inline action boards, to combine the natural fluidity of surfing with the smooth manoeuvres of snowboarding.  It’s the closest thing to surfing on dry land.

The ‘Surf Anywhere’ campaign aims to make a positive difference, to tie in with government initiatives which encourage alternative sports in schools and promote a healthier lifestyle including the 5-a-day nutritional message.  It is hoped that the campaign will inspire and encourage ongoing after-school Street Surfing clubs after each visit.

The campaign is supported by the British Junior Surfing Team and seeks to find future junior surf talent from UK schools at each event to feed into the British Surfing talent pool.  Calypso’s Surf Coaches have been selecting youngsters with potential talent all year and the best will be attending a ‘Surf Academy’ being held in Cornwall in April this year.
