Learning partnership ITE grants announced
Published:  29 January, 2010

Museums and archives will work with more than 1,000 trainee teachers to support learning, develop cross-curricular projects and encourage school visits following the announcement of successful bids for the 2009-10 Initial Teacher Education (ITE) Grants Programme.

There are 15 awards across the English regions and the programme will start in January 2010, ranging in focus from projects on World War II, object-based learning, boy’s writing and the history of the Black Country

The ITE Grants Programme builds partnerships and develops good practice between museums, archives and organisations which offer initial teacher education.

MLA chief executive Roy Clare said: “Congratulations to the successful applicants. The ITE Grants programme will enable teachers at the beginning of their career to be inspired by museums and archives, and to see in practice how beneficial these experiences are to the development of children and young people.”

The ITE programme is designed to:

  • Empower teachers at the  beginning of their professional careers in using of museum and archive  collections
  • Challenge museum and archive  staff to think about their professional practice and collections by working  with student teachers
  • Develop and embed  partnerships between museums, archives and Initial Teacher Education providers  and expanding the number of placement opportunities available in a range of  museum and archive settings
  • Using the placement  experience as a catalyst for all partners to achieve stronger outcomes for  children and young people

These ITE Grants are part of the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) Strategic Commissioning programme - a two-year cultural learning programme that finishes in 2011, and is funded by the Department of Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) and the Department for Children Schools and Families (DCSF).
