Next generation teaching technology from NYnet
Published:  29 January, 2010

Ampleforth College has signed a new five year contract with leading broadband provider NYnet to deliver a high-speed broadband connection to dramatically improve its online access.

This access will have a positive impact on pupils, teachers and parents at the boarding college, by allowing real-time communication with parents, many of which live overseas.

As a result of the contract, NYnet has been able to provide excellent value for money to Ampleforth College, a Benedictine School under the guidance and care of the monks of Ampleforth Abbey, by supplying five times as much bandwidth compared to competitors.

Reliable communications has always been a problem at Ampleforth College, mobile phone signal is poor in the area and the new NYnet infrastructure will enable reliable communications via the internet instead.  The system will also allow teachers who travel frequently to access the network remotely via a Virtual Private Network (VPN), enabling them to access college files and work off site.

Giles Duncan, Systems Manager at Ampleforth College, said: “The extra bandwidth provided by NYnet will enable faster and more reliable internet access and allow uninterrupted communication between students and parents which was limited via the previous network.

“The new connection will increase our potential to use new technologies such as video conferencing and home working.  These technologies will allow us to provide rich media resources from the school to any location with a similar connection, enabling teachers and students to access and use these valuable College resources from anywhere at any time.”

Ampleforth is the latest in a number of schools and colleges that have benefitted from the NYnet network, via the Yorkshire & Humber Metropolitan Area Network, which supplies connections to many of the region’s further education facilities.
