Diffused daylighting for new schools
Published:  29 January, 2010

The Kalwall system of diffused daylighting has been widely specified by AEDAS architects for seven new schools commissioned by Knowsley Council and built by Balfour Beatty.  Daylight research proves, and Knowsley school staff confirm, that the translucent system has a marked influence on pupil behaviour, well-being and learning.

By using Kalwall, the schools enjoy many benefits which traditional glazing, particularly glass, does not provide.  The evenly distributed diffused daylight means that solar gain is controlled and that shadows and glare are all eliminated, as are shading devices, curtains and blinds.  Importantly, running costs at the schools are reduced because of the system’s highly insulating performance which means less energy is required for artificial lighting, heating and air-conditioning.  The translucent roofs also reduced costs, because their lower weight eliminated the need for expensive secondary support, and less maintenance is required because, unlike traditional glass rooflights, natural dirt and rain streaks cannot be seen.
