Programme Led Apprentices prove a big hit
Published:  10 December, 2009

An LSC funded programme has generated a successful new wave of Programme Led Apprenticeships (PLAs) in the Thames Valley.

The programme aims to enrol 250 students onto PLAs, a flexible alternative to traditional apprenticeships, particularly for those unable to find employment in the current economy.

Participating colleges have included Abingdon and Witney College, Bracknell and Wokingham College, East Berkshire College, Henley College, Oxford and Cherwell Valley College and Thames Valley University.

Interserve, Argyle Electrical and Babcock International are just three employers that have taken on PLAs through the programme.

Lesley Hoey, Director of Employer Services at East Berkshire College and manager of the programme comments: “The feedback from colleges, employers and students has been overwhelmingly supportive of the PLAs. Their flexibility presents them as a vital alternative to traditional apprenticeships, particularly with youth unemployment so high at the moment.”
