STI restores the calm and order at Hamonds High School
Published:  09 November, 2009

Hamonds High School in West Norfolk is relishing its return to calm and order thanks to STI (Europe) and its innovative Stopper product which has completely eradicated the school's problem of false fire alarms.

Hamonds is a 750-pupil mixed high school and had been suffering malicious fire alarm activations on an increasingly regular basis, including three in a single day. It was a major issue which needed addressing as quickly and as effectively as possible. Leigh Sharpe, School Support Manager at Hamonds, was given the task of sourcing a solution, one which would provide a long term method of combating the extensive disruption to classes, staff and pupils that the false alarms were inevitably causing through persistent evacuations of the building.

Having used STI Europe's products before to cover fire detector heads that were vulnerable to tampering, this proved an ideal starting point for Leigh. However, he was initially dubious as to whether STI's Stopper could guarantee any success in deterring students from setting off false alarms from the break glass call points located around the school. Leigh had wanted a lockable thermostat cover for the alarm call points but this was deemed unsuitable in terms of Health and Safety Standards - while it would certainly have helped prevent malicious use, it would also hinder the all important access required for the alarm to be activated in the event of a real emergency.

Despite his initial misgivings, STI's staff persevered in providing Leigh with all the support and information they could to help provide a bespoke solution to the school's problem. Leigh commented, "Sales staff were more than helpful in every regard, sending us an example for our perusal and use as a precursor to purchase. We have now purchased an alarmed stopper for every break glass that is accessible to students and to date, some four months after installation, we have had no malicious activations."

STI supplied the Stoppers for Hamonds High School, which emit a piercing 96dB sounder alarm if they are opened or tampered with. In total, the school now has 22 Stoppers fitted and none of the units have been tampered with or broken. To aid Leigh in the selection process, STI provided a list of testimonials from previous purchasers of the Stopper. Leigh contacted some of them, all of whom gave positive feedback. The fact that some had purchased the Stoppers up to 10 years ago and they were still effectively preventing malicious activations convinced Leigh further that they could provide a costeffective long-term solution. In deciding to purchase the Stopper, he added, "A quality product provided by a proactive, obliging organisation."

The Stopper from STI is constructed of tough, clear polycarbonate and protects the alarm call point underneath from vandalism, misuse and accidental activation. For external applications, weather proof models can also protect against the ingress of dust or water. A lock or break-seal option is available for extra security with a choice of red, blue, yellow or green to match the given application.
