High scoring roofing solutions from Alumasc for new low carbon school
Published:  09 November, 2009

A complete package of responsibly sourced roofing solutions from market leaders Alumasc, has been chosen for a new BREEAM Assessed school in Sunderland, as part of a Low Carbon Schools initiative.

Hetton Lyons Primary School was keen to work with Alumasc for their ability to provide an environmentally sound product package and unrivalled technical support.

A ZinCo green roof from Alumasc was specified to complement the sustainable design of the building which also included a wind turbine, a wood burning boiler and rainwater recycling, earning the scheme a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good'. Installed by Alumasc's Approved Contractor Roofclad Systems of Durham, the extensive green roof is designed to evolve and flourish with notable ecological benefits, providing a natural habitat for plants and wildlife, while helping to reduce air and noise pollution, and assisting with rainwater retention and attenuation.

The green roof was applied over Derbigum high performance waterproofing membrane, also from Alumasc, for exceptional long-term performance and durability, warranted for 25 years. To complete the roofing package, Alumasc's Armaseam standing seam metal roofing system was installed on the adjacent school building.
