Taking technology to new heights
Published:  09 November, 2009

Like many schools, Rosebank Primary in Nairn, Scottish Highlands, recognised the potential of interactive technologies to transform teaching and learning. However, the school also acknowledged that critical to the effective use of technologies in the classroom is teacher training. That's why when implementing Promethean ActivBoards and accompanying software, the school chose to establish a comprehensive training programme.

"Previously, we didn't have interactive whiteboards, so one of the reasons we opted for Promethean was for the supplementary training and support," said Jan Dillon, Principal Teacher at Rosebank. "To make sure the technologies enhance the education experience, and so that we get a good return on our investment, it was important that we had an effective training scheme from the outset."

Working closely with Promethean's Teaching and Learning Consultants, Rosebank completed an assessment of its training needs and decided to utilise ActivLearning, Promethean's online professional development site.

ActivLearning features free, introductory tutorials, which advise teachers on the effective use of ActivClassroom technologies. Designed for ease of use, ActivLearning courses are modular, enabling teachers to complete the programmes online at their own pace and in bite-sized chunks.

"I found the training a lifeline during implementation and it made the adoption process much easier," said Jan. "It was great to be guided around the tools and functions available and it gave me the basic skills to start using the technology right away.

"As a result, I've been able to create truly interactive resources, which engage and capture the imagination of my pupils. It's a real pleasure to see how enthralled the children are with what and how they are learning."
