Hands Up for Hand Hygiene
Published:  21 October, 2009

The Center for Disease Control estimates that the average school child misses around one week of school a year due to illness, which equates to approximately 36 million school days lost every year in the UKą.

It is estimated that a great number of these days could be reduced if children washed their hands regularly. Indeed, recent studies have shown that hand washing with soap is by far the best way to prevent the spread of many illnesses and good hand hygiene practices adopted by children would help to prevent the spread of germs from home to school and back again.

But are we actually doing enough to educate children on the importance of adopting good hand hygiene practices in order to keep both themselves and others healthy?

From an early age children should be taught the importance of washing their hands with soap, at critical moments, such as after using the toilet, playing outside, touching animals, coughing and sneezing or before eating food. Encouraging children to wash their hands whilst at school would also help to influence their hand washing practices at home.

So, what can teachers do to educate children about the importance of adopting good hand hygiene practices?

Christine Mottershead, Marketing Director at Deb advises: "With Global Handwashing Day˛ being marked on 15th October, there has never been a better time to educate children on the importance of hand hygiene. Washing hands can be interesting and more importantly can be integrated into school day activities. If we teach children that good hand hygiene is fun then it will develop from being a game into normal behaviour."

"Educational establishments can work with their washroom services suppliers to create a campaign to educate children on why they should wash their hands. Companies like Deb offer support and advice through marketing materials and information on hand hygiene.

To celebrate Global Handwashing Day, Deb has launched a suite of new posters for schools which are available to download free from Deb's website."

With the ‘flu season fast approaching, it has never been a more important time to teach children that hand washing is an essential activity and that we can prevent the spread of germs and bacteria that cause common illnesses by simply washing our hands!
