Full Marks for Mapei at Scottish Borders Schools
Published:  16 September, 2009

Mapei's Eco-friendly products have once again been specified for use in a major public sector flooring project.  Three schools in Berwickshire: Eyemouth High School, Earlston High School and The Berwickshire High School had a total of approx. 26,000mē of carpet and vinyl floors installed using Mapei levelling compounds, damp proof membranes and adhesives.

The highly developed and proven Eco products were specified by contractors Proctor Flooring of Washington, Tyne and Wear, having used them before and experienced the benefits they bring to this type of contract.

Mapei's Eco products are proving to be extremely popular with local authorities, due to the absence of solvents and low odour emissions.  They make them ideal for public buildings and schools where health and safety is a major consideration.

Very low VOC emissions also make the products more user-friendly for the installer and the surrounding environment.

The original floor surfaces were concrete, thus requiring mechanical abrasion to remove any surface contamination that could have occurred during their installation. Following the application of Mapei's epoxy surface DPM, Proctor Flooring applied 3mm Mapei Latexplan Trade smoothing and levelling compound with high compressive strength and low odour. Floor coverings can be installed after only 12 hours, providing a quick turnaround for projects such as this, on a tight schedule.

To complete the installation, Mapei's carpet adhesive, Ultrabond Eco 185 and vinyl adhesive, Ultrabond Eco VS90 - universal high temperature and non-staining - were used.

The same process and system of products were then used on the ground, first and second floors.

Mapei is the world's largest manufacturer of adhesives, sealants and chemical products for building. With over 70 years of experience, Mapei is a specialist in the production of quality products for the installation of all types of wall and floor coverings, and has a vast range of admixtures and repair products for concrete and building materials.
