50m for expansion as diplomas reach ‘tipping point'
Published:  15 May, 2009

Diplomas are reaching the crucial ‘tipping point' as new figures show that over 97 percent of local authorities will be offering the new qualifications by September 2010, Schools Minister Jim Knight said.

He also revealed that the numbers of students registered to study Diplomas is likely to triple this year - to at least 40,000. To support the expansion of the Diploma programme Jim Knight also mapped out £50million in new investment, to provide local areas with the set-up costs they need to deliver the qualifications. The money will help prepare teachers and trainers, establish timetables and organise transport plans, as well as more general development of local infrastructure.

Jim Knight said: "We have reached the tipping point for Diplomas. Over three times the number of students will be starting in September than did so last year. As we reach the end of summer more may decide they want to choose these qualifications as well. Almost every local area will offer a Diploma by 2010. By 2013 all the Diplomas will be available in every part of the country.

"Word of mouth continues to spread and momentum builds as demand from schools, colleges and - most importantly - students grow. People are increasingly realising that these are excellent qualifications that are popular with both Higher Education and employers."

Diplomas combine academic theory with practical knowledge applied to real-life and work-related situations. All Diplomas require a student to achieve a minimum standard in English, Maths and ICT, complete a project and do at least 10 days work experience. Diploma students will acquire the skills and knowledge which are essential for success in employment and higher education, both related to the subject they are studying and wider skills such as teamwork, self-management and critical thinking.
