Guiding Schools towards a Greener Outlook
Published:  25 March, 2009

Sustainability is an issue that is becoming increasingly important for school leaders everywhere, as the government increases its pressure on schools to become Sustainable Schools by 2020.

The DCSF has outlined a series of targets that it would like schools to achieve by 2020, and listed them under eight headings termed ‘Doorways.'

For some school leaders, the changes that need to be made to comply with the doorway demands may seem daunting and expensive, but SCEMES Ltd has created The Handbook of Sustainable Procurement to help schools on their sustainable schools journey.

The Headteachers and Bursars Handbook of Sustainable Procurement is a directory offering schools a comprehensive list of sustainable suppliers and has been created to help schools achieve their sustainable schools targets.

It is a free resource for educational users and is circulated free of charge to 32,000 schools and colleges nationwide every April.

The 2009 edition will be published shortly and will contain listings of local and national businesses that supply everything from local farm produce to renewable energy systems, as well as valuable information for school leaders on the sustainable schools initiative.

It is designed to provide school leaders with all the information and resources that they need to understand the issues relating to sustainability and to encourage them make sustainable procurement a key part of their annual purchasing plan.
