RSPCA campaign for improved meat labelling reaches the classroom
Published:  25 March, 2009

Schoolchildren are being invited to join the debate about improved meat labelling following the launch of the RSPCA's ‘Rooting for Pigs' campaign. The RSPCA's primary and secondary farming lesson resources help explain the issues of animals being reared for meat highlighted by the Society, as well as recent television programmes by Jamie Oliver and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.

"Helping young people to be aware of issues such as food labelling and modern farming practices can only be seen as a positive step in ensuring they become conscientious consumers into adulthood," explains RSPCA National Education Manager Chris Holmes.

The farming lesson resources are just two examples of more than 90 curriculum-linked lesson resources, all written by teachers, which are available to download from the RSPCA's education website www.rspca.org.uk/education. Many of the resources are available in Welsh and are linked to the Welsh curriculum. They cover Foundation Stage through to GCSE.

The RSPCA's interactive resource was shortlisted at this year's BETT Awards, which recognises creative and innovative products for pupils and teachers. Copies of Animals and us' will be available free to visitors from the RSPCA stand at The Education Show 2009, which will take place at the Birmingham NEC on 26, 27 and 28 March.
