Over 36,000 10 and 11-year-olds will be given up to 10 hours tuition in either subject over the next two terms, on top of their normal classes, to get them back on track before they reach secondary schools. The funding will also help LEAs provide support to recruit and train tutors and to evaluate children's progress. It is the first step toward the scheme being established nationally - with a £138m national programme launched in September 2009 targeting pupils who are behind the expected level for their age or not on track to make two levels of progress over the key stage.
