Attracting good teachers into challenging schools
Published:  17 February, 2009

Effective from September, the Government is planing to offer teachers an extra £10,000 in order to recruit good teachers to teach in schools with disadvantaged children.

This extra payment will be available provided the teacher stays at the school for three years and will be funded partly by the Government and partly by the school.

500 of the most challenging secondaries will be eligible for the scheme which will target up to 6000 new teachers. The move is part of the Government plan to improve social mobility.

Children's secretary, Ed Balls said, "No child should be held back by their background, so we will now do more to break the link between disadvantage and achievement.

"Great teachers are key to this, so I want to go further now to help heads recruit and retain the very best teachers in the most challenging schools."
