Response to Ofsted ‘08 Annual Performance Assessments
Published:  09 January, 2009

Responding to the Ofsted 2008 Annual Performance Assessments Ed Balls, Secretary of State, for Children, Schools and Families, said, "We always act immediately on Ofsted's judgements. So in all nine of the authorities in Ofsted ratings where there are inadequate judgements overall, or in safeguarding, we have either already intervened or are now sending in our intervention experts.

Following initial discussions we will then decide what further action or support is required. In all cases we will work with the authorities concerned - and with the Local Government Association - to put in place improvement support or intervention as quickly as possible.

"From next year (09) Ofsted will be moving to a new and more intensive inspection regime. I am pleased they are making this change and that this is the last Annual Performance Assessment which is primarily desk based. From now on Ofsted will carry out an unannounced annual inspection of safeguarding practice in every local authority and full inspections over a three year period of services for vulnerable children."
