Sculpting, Stuffing and Squeezing - Carrying on in Key Stage 1
by Ros Bayley, Lynn Broadbent, Sally Featherstone, A&C Black, paperback rrp £14.99 (£11.99 publisher's 20% discount)
Published:  09 January, 2009

This series supports the continuing growth and development of independent learning and practical activities which are features of early learning.

Children in KS1 need and deserve the chance to build on the best of practice in the Early Years Foundation Stage. Such practice carefully balances adult directed tasks with learning that children initiate and develop themselves, often in the company of responsive adults.

These activities, which include sand and water play, construction, role play, independent mark, making and writing, dance and movement, creative work and outdoor play are some of the activities children value most and they are often the ones they miss most in Years 1 and 2.

The aims of the Carrying on in Key Stage 1 series are:

  • to promote active learning, thinking skills and problem solving in KS1
  • to offer opportunities to cover the KS1 curriculum through active methods based on a child-centred approach
  • to continue the methods and resources used in the Foundation Stage while maintaining pace and challenge

These activities described are mapped on to National Curriculum Programmes of Study for Key Stage 1.
