Anger over Glitter song in GCSE
Published:  16 December, 2008

The use of a Gary Glitter song in a GCSE music assignment is being reviewed by England's largest exam board after a string of complaints.

The convicted paedophile's 1970s chart hit, I'm the Leader of the Gang, was listed as "related listening" in coursework for the AQA's music GCSE.

The government said the song's inclusion was "totally unacceptable" and called for it to be removed.

AQA said it was reviewing the decision to include the song in its GCSE.

A spokesman said it had only just become aware of complaints.

She said: "Until the situation is reviewed we are unable to say what decision will be made."

Concern was raised by an unnamed deputy head teacher quoted in the Sun newspaper.

He told the newspaper: "He's a convicted paedophile jailed for sexually abusing kids. It's completely inappropriate to recommend him as listening material.
