St. Johns School's eco ideas turn Boris Green
Published:  10 November, 2008

St. Johns School in Southwark, has become an environmental award winner making other schools green with envy! St Johns has scooped a bin full of prizes and plenty of the green stuff to go with it, courtesy of new London Mayor Boris Johnson.

The children and staff investigated new ways of living with sustainable packed lunches, recycling, global footprints, solar and wind power.  This led to the school winning one of the London School Environmental Awards and £1,500 presented by Boris Johnson.

The school went on to win a "Green Oscar" for creativity at the Southwark Environmental Day in Southwark Park and their Environmental Week where the school held a variety of workshops culminating in a stunning re-cycled catwalk fashion show.

The school also won the Tesco Environment Competition and £1,500 worth of recycled goodies, and the Thames Water Competition, making total prize winnings of £3,000.

The money will be used to improve the school dining area and to promote sustainable packed lunches and environmental awareness about food, including composting waste.
