Schools recycling cartons
Published:  14 October, 2008

Each year 200 million milk and juice cartons are used in England's primary schools, while secondary school pupils and staff get through more than 35 million.  Now, thanks to a new initiative launched by Tetra Pak and the carton industry under ACE UK (Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment), these paper-based cartons can be recycled.

The Businesses & Schools carton recycling scheme marks a major step forward in expanding carton recycling coverage across the UK.

Whilst businesses and schools are increasingly conscious of their environmental impacts, they have previously lacked the means to actively recycle their paper-based cartons through a simple, permanent scheme.

Tetra Pak's new service enables schools and businesses to contact their local carton recycling contractors through a straight-forward web portal.  Businesses and schools can get a quote, and set up collection.

Fay Dashper, Recycling Operations Manager at Tetra Pak, said: "With many primary schools giving pupils a milk carton every day and companies providing milk for tea, people can now do even more for the environment by recycling their cartons outside their homes. Think how many more cartons can be given a new life as something else.  Office workers, pupils and teachers across the UK are already excited about this new, easy way that they can do a bit more for the environment."

The service is now up-and-running in the North East of England thanks to J&B, Tetra Pak's contractors in the region.  Tetra Pak is working to further extend coverage of the scheme.

Once sufficient quantities of cartons are collected by contractors and baled in the regional hubs, the cartons are sent to the Orebro mill in Sweden. They can then be recycled into a number of different products, ranging from plasterboard liner to high-strength paper bags and envelopes.

Tetra Pak continues to work with new paper mills to trial carton recycling in the UK to ensure the industry can cater for the increase in carton recycling as more areas come on board.

Please remember: wash and squash your cartons before recycling.
