Valuable experience at The Coventry Arms
Published:  12 September, 2008

The Coventry Arms in Corfe Mullen is proud to support the local community by sourcing all its produce locally; however this support also extends to the helping hand they give to primary and secondary schools and colleges in the area.  From hog roasts at school fundraisers and assisting trainee chefs taking NVQ qualifications, the team at The Coventry Arms is committed to supporting young people.    The latest is Beckie Grove, a bright, year 10 student from Corfe Hills School who is learning some useful skills during her work experience placement.

Year 10 students have an opportunity to leave the classroom for two weeks and go into a real working environment.   Beckie comments:  "We started planning our work experience placements back in November, but as my dream job is to be a mounted police officer, I was struggling to find a placement and one which was close enough for my mum to drop me off every morning. I live next door to The Coventry Arms so it seemed like a perfect opportunity to expand my communication skills and confidence, and get an insight into what it takes to run a pub - and believe me, it's a lot more than I thought!"

The Coventry Arms also currently employ two chefs who work alongside head chef Ian Gibbs. Both young chefs are training for an NVQ Level three in Professional Cookery and Restaurant Manager, Belinda Moors is also training for a qualification in Hospitality and Food Supervision.

Beckie continues "During the two weeks I worked with Ian in the Kitchen, I didn't just peel potatoes and wash up, I got a real feel for quality ingredients and I actually helped Ian make some really exciting dishes. The second week I worked with John in the front of house.  This involved taking orders and serving customers and learning how to manage orders and service."
