Lorna Simpson, NDCS Education Development Manager explains: "Over 80 percent of deaf children attend mainstream schools. At present there is a huge attainment gap between what deaf children and their hearing peers are achieving. We therefore urge teaching professionals to take advantage of these resources to ensure deaf children have the chance to flourish in the classroom and achieve their full potential."
The ‘Deaf Friendly Teachers' Powerpoints' are a series of presentations on deaf awareness, to equip teachers with specific techniques to enable them to meet the needs of deaf children in the classroom.
The ‘Starting Schools Pack' is a combination of all NDCS schools resources, and includes information on bullying, and understanding deafness. Packs are tailored for nursery, primary or secondary.
Finally, a new curriculum framework entitled ‘Moving On' is for teachers to deliver to deaf students in years ten and eleven to help them make informed choices about their future education and employment. It includes topics such as personal finance, and independent living.
Lorna Simpson adds: "NDCS is the national charity dedicated to creating a world without barriers for deaf children and young people. We are committed to supporting teachers so that they can in turn work more effectively with deaf children."
