FE colleges are slipping behind provision of laptops
Published:  12 September, 2008

According to the most recently available figures from BECTA for FE Colleges in England, the target of one internet-connected computer for every permanent member of teaching staff was achieved or bettered by only a little over half of the colleges.

Almost one third of the colleges surveyed reported that they could not cope with the demand for computers, while half disagreed with the statement that access to the internet was "easy at any time" - a figure which represented no improvement on the level in 2003.

Although there's no formal research to prove the point, the answer seems to be that two non-IT worries are holding colleges back: security and charging.

When a student uses a fixed computer, neither is an issue. But once laptops are introduced both factors become significant.  Where, for example, are college students supposed to put their laptops when they take a break from academic work and go for a jog around the athletics track?  Where can they leave the laptop in order for it to be recharged?

One solution which looks like rescuing both personalised learning and the laptops-for-all programme is to have banks of secure fixed point charging units for the machines. The cabinets have individually locking compartments, each with its own built in mains plug. Electrical safety is assured as each compartment is earthed and meets EU requirements.
