Fire protection
Published:  12 September, 2008

An innovative capital release scheme for universities and student accommodation now being offered by Siemens Building Technologies, Fire Safety, makes it possible to upgrade existing fire detection and protection installations to the latest standards without the need for capital expenditure. Indeed, in most cases, participants in the scheme will receive an immediate cash payout.

The basis of the scheme is straightforward: Siemens purchases the existing installation for an agreed sum then leases it back to the original owner for a fixed period - typically 20 years. Under the terms of the scheme, Siemens not only upgrades the system immediately to meet current requirements as determined by a detailed risk assessment, it also maintains the system and keeps it up to date throughout the whole of the lease period.

The latest policies issued by the Chief Fire Officers' Association (CFOA) demand action on reducing false alarms and, in many applications, strongly recommend increasing the number of detectors used.  By eliminating the need to raise capital for the upgrade work, the Siemens capital release scheme makes it easy to achieve compliance with these policies. This not only ensures that life and property protection is optimised, it also guarantees that top levels of response from the Fire Service are maintained, which can also help to minimise insurance costs.
