Taking the heat out of roof applications
Published:  12 September, 2008

As school buildings begin to age roof failure can occur at any time, and often when it's least expected. This means that crucial roof repairs cannot always be scheduled into school shutdown periods, and may have to be conducted whilst there are pupils and teachers in the building below - but how do you ensure that any works carried out are safe and will not present a risk of fire?

Little Digmoor School in Skelmersdale needed to re-waterproof the roof of its 1960's school building, which had begun to deteriorate.  The school required a product that could be applied whilst the children were in the building - to minimize disruption and allow a greater window for work to be done. There were also several rooflights that had been removed, resulting in a great deal of raised detail areas some of which were in very close proximity. This meant that a traditional sheet waterproofing system would have been difficult to install.

A Decothane Omega 15 waterproofing system from Liquid Plastics was specified, consisting of a Decothane base coat fully reinforced with Reemat Premium Glass Fibre Matting, and completed with a Decothane top coat. A 40mm Decotherm insulation scheme was also supplied and laid on top of the old system to upgrade the existing insulation.

Decothane is a completely cold, liquid applied waterproofing system that cures to provide a seamless, elastomeric membrane and is guaranteed to last for at least 15 years. It is an incredibly versatile product, which made the waterproofing of difficult detail areas possible. As it is cold applied there is no need for any heat or naked flame on the roof, allowing work to be safely completed whilst the school was in use.
