All-in-One PC's power saving green technology cuts school energy bills

Schools are currently facing the prospect of a substantial escalation in their energy bills. As IT facilities represent a substantial proportion of this cost, it is no surprise that energy efficient "green" computers are being looked at seriously.  It is into this new energy conscious environment that an energy efficient, high performance computer called LoCO2PC has been launched by Akhter.

In spite of its neat integrated form factor, LoCO2PC incorporates exceptional capabilities to handle current and future demands, ensuring longevity of service with significant ongoing savings on annual power bills.

"Escalating power costs, green issues and low power consumption were key factors to consider when planning our new IT system. The All-in-One LoCO2PC with its small footprint and low power usage fitted our criteria perfectly and were installed and delivered on time"

Adrian Blumfield, Chief Executive Officer, Cherry Trees Prep School, Bury St Edmunds.

Qualified energy claims

The LoCO2PC uses less than a third of the energy of some of the PCs that it will replace. It is the first 3GHz integrated PC to qualify under Europe's stringent Energy Star 4.0 benchmark, the standard that separates true energy efficient PCs from those that simply use "Eco-friendly" for marketing advantages. Energy Star 4.0 is the environmental standard mandated across the EU, for public-sector purchasing of computers. To date few PCs actually qualify under Energy Star 4.0, which is the most challenging environmental standard to date.

Energy saving design brings low running costs

The LoCO2PC brings a 19 inch LCD screen, system unit, speakers and DVD writer into a single unit that occupies only a little more space than a standard LCD screen. Smart power management and low energy design ensures that average power consumption is minimised - just 55W in normal use. The LoCO2PC switches to sleep mode, consuming only a tiny 3W, after a period without user activity. If LoCO2PC is used to replace older style PCs, the annual savings on power bills of over £225 a year per PC are realistically possible, where PCs are left on overnight.

Network connection for laptops

IT managers and teaching staff using laptops can gain network access directly via a spare network port on the LoCO2PC. This will help staff who move around between classrooms, where conveniently located network ports might be absent.

"As an eco school and with rising electricity costs the All-in-One LoCO2 PC was chosen by the school council and ICT staff to be deployed within the school. The added bonus of being considerably smaller than a standard PC made it perfect for our needs."

Andrew Wright, Director of Mathematics and ICT, John Hampden Grammar School, High Wycombe

Choice of VESA mount or integrated stand

LoCO2PC has its own stand as well as a built-in VESA 75mm/100mm mount that enables users to locate the PC off the desktop. For teachers, the use of a VESA swivel arm allows the PC to be swung aside whenever a complete view over the classroom is needed.

For more capacity in IT rooms

By eliminating the footprint of the desktop PC system, or the need for under desk space accommodation, the LoCO2PC brings comfortable space saving design. This approach also enables rooms that were often not designed to accommodate computers, to be used to maximum capacity without looking cluttered. Fewer external cables bring a tidy visual appearance and a safer working environment for all. In some schools it can be the power capacity of a room that limits the number of PCs that can be used in a classroom. The very low power demand of LoCO2PC means that up to three or more LoCO2PCs can be added for every older style PC replaced.

Cooler and quieter ICT classrooms

The LoCO2PC's energy efficient integrated design generates less heat, and therefore only minimal fan effort is used to disperse heat. The easily replaced external power supply does not require a fan.  The CPU is cooled by a silent proprietary copper pipe heat exchange system. The power management ensures that while the system is in sleep mode, the power consumption is reduced to just 3W, keeping the unit cool.

Protecting the screen with hard glass

In everyday environments LCD displays have a typical lifetime of 3 to 5 years. To minimise the risk of any wear damage or minor vandalism, hard glass has been incorporated as standard. This minimizes any risk of damage to the screen. The hard glass is rated at 8H hardness, which is capable of withstanding minor vandalism. The integrated 19 inch LCD screen has a resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels and is comfortable to use from almost any angle with its 160° viewing capability.

Future readiness

Users have found that rather than being a cut down PC with minimal features, LoCO2PC is surprisingly well equipped. External displays or projectors can be driven from the external video outputs that include not only VGA, but DVI and HDMI for High Definition TV, ensuring support for the new generation of multimedia displays and full compatibility with the future digital standard. The LoCO2PC supports a range of IntelTM dual core processors, including "Wolfdale", the new generation of IntelTM 45nm Hi-k metal gate silicon technology. These processors enhance the overall performance and power saving, taking low energy performance to a new level.

The integrated advantage

The LoCO2PC has advantages over both notebooks and tower PCs that make it ideal for the classroom. A full 19 inch screen and full-sized keyboard make it ideal for children to use, and it is less easily damaged than a notebook. Its advantage over laptops is that there are no issues of battery life, recharging or secure storage.

For long service and the environment

The compact design helps room planners to create superior multi-purpose classrooms. LoCO2PC is economical to run and helps schools and colleges do their own bit for the environment. The comprehensive features built into LoCO2PC will help to extend the computer's effective service life. As an integrated PC concept, LoCO2PC is an inherently "green approach" that reduces transport costs, uses fewer resources in manufacture, whilst cutting down on packaging waste and its associated secondary Carbon footprint in addition to all the direct energy saving benefits.

"We were looking for a replacement for teacher laptops in the classroom to be used in conjunction with smartboards and projectors, the  larger screens more robust construction and dual VGA outputs were the ideal solution with the added advantage of dual network connections so negating any additional  rewiring costs to maintain laptop connectivity"

Phillip Trice, ICT Network Administrator, Robert Napier School, Gillingham, Kent

"Akhter is committed long-term to developing genuine energy efficient products. As corporate social responsibility is higher than ever on organisational agendas, we have seen an unprecedented demand for the LoCO2PC that has exceeded our highest expectations."

Humayun Mughal - CEO Akhter Computers plc

External ports are located on the underside of the unit, to restrict access and minimise any scope for interference.
