Music initiative
Published:  10 July, 2008

The Government has been applauded for its radical new initiative to get young people from deprived areas involved in large-scale orchestral music projects.

The Chief Executive of the Federation of Music Services, John Witchell, welcomed the initiative - inspired by Venezuela's highly-successful El Sistema - that is part of a national programme aimed at giving all children the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument.

Speaking at the federation's annual conference in Leeds, he said: "Some very exciting work is going on across the country as all primary school children are given the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument. However El Sistema is different:  It sees increased social cohesion and community spirit as being as important as learning musical skills.  By being immersed in orchestral playing, the children are able to gain life skills, confidence and esteem in a unique way."
