Prevention is the first line of defence
by Richard Lewis, Sony UK
Published:  10 July, 2008

From monitoring access control and intrusion detection to surveillance for vandalism, arson, burglary and bullying, a well planned and maintained security system not only creates a safe and secure learning environment for pupils, staff and the wider community, but it is also much easier to install than many people would think.

As the physical infrastructure and security needs of schools and education facilities have evolved considerably in recent years, so have the capabilities and sophistication of the technology that underpins today's most powerful and effective security solutions. Thanks to the government's substantial investment in ICT for schools, the proliferation of broadband and the increasing affordability and scalability of networked security solutions, it has never been easier for education professionals to take advantage of an existing IP infrastructure and build an intelligent security system.

At Sony, we have worked closely with educational establishments of all sizes to deliver scalable solutions that meet a broad range of security challenges. Time and again, we advise our customers that prevention through real time video intelligence is the first line of defence. We also encourage anyone committed to improving their security to see beyond what can often be intimidating acronyms and technical details and think about the end benefits of having access to real time intelligence, critical information and high resolution images. By engaging with the right security provider, who can design, deliver and help maintain the complete security solution, the installation can also be quick and with the minimum complexity.

By finding a way for technology to carry the burden of relentless detection, Sony has developed an innovative solution that takes the potential effectiveness of security measures to an unprecedented level. It's a solution that has fundamentally changed the nature of surveillance by creating a smarter, more efficient and robust security system that plays an active part in the detection process to help prevent incidents rather than merely provide evidence afterwards. With new, advanced software such as Sony's Real Shot Manager, monitoring for incidents, archiving data and controlling the system has never been more accurate. Staff, students and the local community no longer need to simply react to disruptive, threatening or even violent behaviour that prevents the establishment from functioning successfully but instead, they can now proactively anticipate, monitor and prevent these incidents. By developing technology that can easily integrate into an existing IT infrastructure, we have also strived to make installing a security system even easier.

From an existing security team, teachers, students and parents to the surrounding community and police force, creating a secure and safe environment should be everyone's responsibility and on everyone's agenda.
